Medstrom Celebrates Investors in People Silver Accreditation

We are thrilled to announce that we have achieved the prestigious Silver Award accreditation from Investors in People (IIP). This significant milestone represents two years of dedicated progress and effort.

With only 15% of businesses who undertake the IIP assessment obtaining the silver accreditation and above, we are hugely proud to have been recognised by IIP in this way. Read on to hear from some of the HR team and our exciting plans for the future.

What did we have to evidence to achieve this award?

CW: – To earn this award, we provided a range of evidence to our facilitator, which included training records, development processes, and policies. Our facilitator, who has been with us from the start, conducted interviews with around 70 individuals across the business and during these interviews, she asked various questions and gathered evidence accordingly.

Why did we start this journey with Investors in People what has happened since?

CW: Our journey began in 2021, when we recognised the need for a strong framework to support our employees’ development. We aimed to create an environment that fosters growth for both individuals and the business, with clear evidence of our progress along the way.

What impact will this have on Medstrom and its employees and future employees?

CW: For future employees, this achievement will certainly give them an understanding of how we’re committed, and we really do want to invest in people. As our Joint Chief Executives, Scott and Rachel Apsey often say:

“Without the people we aren’t a business. And it’s the people that make it work.”

ZB: I’ve only been with Medstrom for a couple of months, but I still remember walking in for my interview and spotting the Investors in People plaque on the door. It really caught my attention and made me excited about the prospect of working here because it showed me that Medstrom truly values and invests in its people.

Our lovely HR team
Can you share some positive feedback from this journey?

CW: A few individuals have said:

“Even though the business has grown, you’re not just a number — you still feel like a person at Medstrom”.

“I love Medstrom. It is about the people as well as what you are doing for others outside of the business – at hospitals, ensuring good care etc. People here are so welcoming, and it is like a big family.”

For us, this is really valuable and something we’re incredibly proud of.

DS: I think that the fact that we’ve been able to grow so much and still achieve this award, all whilst showing we’re continuously investing in people was a real achievement.

For me personally, I think introducing EDRs has been a great step forward for the business and we’ve had some really positive feedback on this process. It gives people the opportunity to have an open discussion with their manager to speak about anything they wish, whether it’s to give feedback or discuss how they want to progress.

How will Investors in People fit within our future growth plans?

DS: Going forward, we want to carry on investing in our people and work towards further awards, as we’re not at the highest award yet, so we know we can still do better. People have given us really good feedback on things they want to see us change going forward.

We’ve already begun making some changes. For example, we’ve been working on a new Recruitment Policy to help managers in the recruiting process. And we’ve also brought in one-month and three-month surveys for new starters, to see how they’re getting on and if they have everything they need. That way, we can see if there’s anything we need to address at an early stage, before it potentially gets too far down the line.

CW: The work that we’ve done with Investors in People is something that we want to weave into everything that we do, and it will especially support us in putting together strong development plans for people. For me, it’s about retaining individuals and watching them develop, becoming leaders and senior members of the team in 3, 5 or 10-years’ time. If we can achieve that and retain that longevity of employment, then that would be brilliant.

To achieve silver within only four years is a massive achievement. And it’s been a massive team effort, not just from the HR team, but everybody across the business who’s been involved. It’s with their support that we’ve got to this level.
