Find your ‘Me’ in Medstrom – Meet Matt
Read the stories of some of our employees and their careers across Medstrom and discover how you can join the team.
A key figure in our New Business department, Matt discusses his nursing background and how it influenced his transition into his current role at Medstrom. He describes his day-to-day life at work, what he loves about his job and how he applies his passion for healthcare in a new way.
Passion for Patient Care
Before joining Medstrom, Matt was a nurse for over 20 years. The transition into the private sector could have been difficult, but he claims the opposite:
“When I realised I could use my nursing skills in a clinical sales environment and that they were actually completely transferable. It was one of my greatest highlights.”
Perhaps this is since so much of his role doesn’t feel like sales at all. When he stands in front of customers, discussing and demonstrating acute care products like the Dolphin Therapy mattress and the Eleganza 5 bed, he recognises that he’s not trying to convince anyone of anything.
“I talk about it so passionately and easily because I’m not trying to get you on board. These are the facts that I totally believe because I’ve seen it in practice.”
The sensation of walking into a meeting with a prospective customer (some of whom are sceptical of different products) with a complete absence of worry or self-consciousness about the product is not a positive he takes lightly; he acknowledges the uniqueness distilled in Medstrom via the combination of attentive service and specialist equipment. The presence of clinically trained staff in almost every department, paired with a distinctive transparency, have led to a shift in what customers now anticipate.
Essentially, Medstrom has now set an industry-standard precedent in recognising the value of having clinically experienced staff involved in the business workforce.
“Medstrom has grown with the needs of the client base equally. Half of the reasons people give for entering into arrangements with Medstrom are because of the people they built relationships with in the sales and clinical team. I know that we, as Medstrom, do a good job in our relationships with customers.”
A Day In The Life…
It’s hard to pin down what a typical day looks like for Matt – something he relishes. The lack of a strict routine allows for a huge degree of control, self-direction and flexibility in his role. When asked to describe exactly what he ‘does’ day to day, he lists a variety of tasks: building new connections and maintaining existing ones, going out into the field to support installed equipment, travelling to a Trust to perform a demo of a product; even following up on and enquiring about specific patients who are currently on Medstrom equipment and identifying if there’s more value they could be getting from their usage.
The variety means that if something isn’t going his way, there’s always something completely different he can turn his attention to. He likens the job satisfaction he experiences to that of being a nurse – the ability to interact with a person or situation and know that you’ve made a positive impact. Whilst benefitting the patient is the ultimate goal, Matt mentions that building relationships with the staff in the hospitals is another huge drive – when he hears feedback from ward staff such as:
“’The relationship we’ve built with Matt and with Medstrom is better than we’ve had with any other company’…that’s where I get my job satisfaction. That just makes you go home at the end of the day and think ‘yeah, I did a good job with that’”.
Award-winning work
In a job peppered with an ever-changing focus, Matt makes it clear that the ethos of Medstrom is what grounds the entire process.
“You know what’s the priority here, and the priority I feel from Medstrom is that their staff feel comfortable.”
The initial ‘door opening’ with customers can be tricky and somewhat out of his hands, but the supportive and helpful environment experienced from his colleagues and management absolves a lot of that potential frustration or sense of competition so often felt in sales roles.
“The hierarchy isn’t very vertical, it’s quite flat…I feel like I could text anyone in the company or call anyone and ask them for advice, even if it’s a silly question. There are no egos here.”
This foundation of mutual trust and respect between colleagues at Medstrom is absolutely what has kept Matt at the company for 6 years – in which time he has won 2 awards for success and passion regarding Medstrom’s ITU solutions. The simple and noble notion of helping people is at the core of Matt’s purpose and experience at Medstrom; a philosophy he recognises is shared company wide. In his words:
“That’s what I love about Medstrom – they recognise that the people they employ and support are human beings.”
