Championing UK Manufacturing
Medstrom’s manufacturing journey began out of necessity. Uncertainty surrounding Brexit prompted its commitment to start manufacturing hospital beds in the UK in 2020 under the leadership of now Capital Operations Director, Matt Stonton. Expertise gained with a renowned, neighbouring manufacturer in Derbyshire, propelled Medstrom on its way to developing a lean, flexible and successful manufacturing outfit. Coupled with the team’s collective knowledge and experience within the medical devices sector, Medstrom was quick to establish its first branded hospital bed – the Medstrom Solo.
Medstrom’s manufacturing adaptability has been demonstrated on numerous occasions, but none more so than at the outset when confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With global supply chain and distribution coming under intense pressure, Medstrom’s unique manufacturing model enabled close control of supply chain, quality, cost and highly responsive delivery times. Overall, among the very few manufacturers able to safely meet customer demands during a turbulent period, all without furloughing or losing any employees.
Evidencing Improved Outcomes
Despite these challenges and in such a short space of time, the Medstrom Solo bed has been phenomenally received within the UK healthcare market and even enhanced in the form of a newer model – Solo+. Capable of delivering all the known benefits of a standard med/surg bed, the Solo range also offers an unrivalled height range. An ultra-low height to reduce the risk of falls and support early mobilisation, combined with an superior, safe working height to minimise the risk of staff injury. In excess of 10,000 hospital beds have been manufactured at the Castle Donington site and distributed to various hospitals, with many of these clinical benefits evidenced in practice already. For example, one NHS Trust documented ~60% reduction in falls resulting in harm, following the introduction of the Solo range.

Within four years of becoming a UK hospital bed manufacturer, Medstrom has already launched another development in its unrivalled bed range, the Medstrom SoloMH. This unique and innovative electric-profiling bed has been carefully designed for difficult environments without compromising clinical outcomes. Crafted by listening to experts within the mental health environment, plus understanding the risks involved in safeguarding both clients and caregivers, the bed was specifically adapted to optimise safety and provide enhanced protection.
